M&M to roll out new MUV Ingenio soon
The launch of the Ingenio will be followed by the launch of a premium SUV codenamed W201 positioned above the top-end Scorpio variant.
The Ingenio is considered to be M&M's most ambitious project after the Scorpio, and the company intends to introduce it in several foreign markets, like the Scorpio that retails as the Mahindra Goa outside India. It is to be manufactured at the company's Nasik plant in Maharashtra, and will initially have a diesel engine followed by the launch of a petrol variant and an automatic transmission variant.
Dr. Pawan Goenka, president, automotive sector, M&M, said that the sales of the domestic Scorpio were up 9 per cent, at a little above 30,000. Saying that because India's utility vehicle is primarily diesel-driven, they had introduced the petrol Scorpio only in overseas markets.
M&M has set up CKD (complete knocked down) assembly facilities in Egypt and Brazil, and has also started distribution of the Scorpio in Chile and Peru, and is looking at setting up facilities in Russia. (Also see: Mahindra Scorpio SUV, Pik-Up range launched in Brazil)
Currently in its repertoire, M&M has the Commander (recently renamed Major) and the Max at the bottom-end, followed by the Bolero, and the Scorpio above it. The Bolero is the largest seller in the M&M camp, notching up around 4,000 units per month. The Scorpio follows next with around 3,200 units sold every month.

New Delhi, 5th September 2008
New Delhi, 5th September 2008- Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. (TKM), today announced launch of the All-New Corolla Altis at the "India Expo Centre - Greater Noida". Present at the occasion were Mr.Yasuhiko Yokoi, Managing Officer, Mr. Soichiro Okudaira, Managing Officer & Mr. Yasuyuki Kawamoto; Chief Engineer - Corolla Altis, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC). Mr. Vikram Kirloskar; Vice Chairman, Mr. Hiroshi Nakagawa; Managing Director & Mr. Sandeep Singh; Deputy Managing Director ; Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. (TKM).
Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. (TKM) introduced the 9th Generation Corolla in India in 2003. This introduction triggered a surge in demand for Premium Mid-size Sedan models in India. Since then, Corolla has set the benchmark for this segment and has met requests from the Indian Market with innovative luxury, designed to satisfy the auto consumer's appetite for perfection. Reflecting this, Corolla earned the No. 1 ranking in the JD Power IQS rankings for 2 consecutive years in 2003 & 2004. Corolla's good acceptance has also inspired several auto majors to explore the possibility of introducing models in the Premium Mid-size Sedan segment.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Yasuhiko Yokoi, Managing Officer of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) said, "Corolla has been a true symbol of Toyota passenger cars, and has contributed to the growth of the vehicle industry all over the world, with sales of over 30 million units so far. As you may know, Toyota's global sales volume was 8.4 million units last year, including 4.1 million units of passenger cars. The global sales figure of Corolla was 1.3 million last year, accounting for more than 30% of Toyota's global passenger car sales. And I'm very glad to introduce this very important 10th generation car here in India today!"
Mr. Soichiro Okudaira, Managing Officer of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) said, "The concept this time is Happy Corolla for Our Planet. This model has been developed based upon a global point of view to maximize customer satisfaction. The DNA that has been handed down for 40 years is alive and well today. Displaying technology and concepts that are always ahead of time, our mission has been to create a new generation car. The challenge was to surpass the Toyota quality and realize a "Quality Revolution". To achieve that, we repeated the evaluation test called "5m impression" to pursue quality appealing to the five senses. The 5m impression, in particular, includes an item that appeals to customers before they get into the car, like styling. An item for feeling an immediate difference after getting into the car, like the sound of doors closing, the comfort of sitting in the seat. And an item for experiencing an immediate difference after the vehicle starts moving, like smoothness of the steering thanks to EPS, use of electronic throttle which makes the vehicle move smoothly. As a result of our efforts to always keep Indian customers firmly in mind, I think you'll find we arrived at a more than satisfactory result".
Mr. Yasuyuki Kawamoto, Chief Engineer - Corolla Altis of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) said, Based on this global theme, the new Corolla Altis for Indian customers is refined as "One Class Above" with indisputable quality and dignity, which is beyond any other car in its segment. For Indian customers, we set two priorities. The first was styling. We wanted to create a dynamic & distinctive feel for outstanding presence. The second priority was luxury & advanced features. For safety we have High Intensity discharge (HID) Head Lamp, Automatic Electro chromatic (EC) inner mirror. For comfort we have developed 8-way power driver seat, Audio Controls and MID Switch on the steering and many more. Towards the fun to drive aspect, we provided the Sequential shift, which lets you enjoy the feel of manual driving even in the automatic variant. Cruise control, Telescopic steering for all variants, Electric Power Steering ensures a comfortable ride. So I am confident that we have created a "One class above" vehicle for the Indian customers.
Mr. Vikram Kirloskar, Vice Chairman, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said, This year's target is to sell 63,000 vehicles. And by fiscal 2015 we are aiming for a market share of about 10%, the Altis marks our big step towards the achievement of this goal. We are also planning to introduce several new models in the near future to meet this goal. Regarding the small car that everyone has been waiting for, we aim to start Production and Sales around the end of 2010 or early 2011. So get ready for even more excitement!
Mr. Hiroshi Nakagawa, Managing Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said, To help everyone become more familiar with this incredibly advanced new Corolla, we gave it the name "Altis," which is derived from the word "altitudinous" meaning "the Absolute Superiority". Our goal is to sell an average of 2,000 vehicles a month. And as the name implies, we aim to make the Altis the best-selling car in its class. Up until now, Corolla has been popular with businessmen. But making it attractive to young executives will create a new market in the C segment. Altis's main selling point is Toyota's unparalleled quality, and our ambition is for the Corolla Altis to revolutionize Indian consumers' quality expectations, raising them to a higher level. It is to communicate this message to the Indian market that we have also changed our corporate slogan to "Quality Revolution".
Mr. Sandeep Singh, Dy. Managing Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said, We are offering the Corolla Altis in three grades, the 1.8 G M/T, the 1.8 G(L) M/T and a top-end grade 1.8 V(L) A/T model. The Corolla now delivers max power of 130 HP, which is 7 hp higher than the earlier model. The 1.8G M/T grade which is an equivalent of the previous H2 model, has been improved by the addition of features like Electric Power Steering, Optitron Combination Meter, Multi-information Display, Steering wheel with Audio Controls & MID switch and many more. The medium-grade 1.8G (L) M/T model has features like HID headlamps with washers and 8-Way Power Driver Seats with Power Lumbar Support.
And the top-grade 1.8V (L) A/T model has features like Cruise Control and Gate Shift Type Auto Transmission with Sequential Shift.
On the sales front, we are planning a marketing blitz with simultaneous 100 events at shopping malls, airports and showroom nationwide. It will be an all-out effort, starting tomorrow, to bring more customers into contact with the car by showcasing the Altis throughout India.
The All-New Corolla Altis is the second Corolla launched in India. The theme of this car is "Happy Corolla for our Planet" and its mission is to appeal to consumers' five senses. Toyota's objectives for the launch include further consolidation of Toyota's position in the premium mid-size segment with its renowned and internationally celebrated product, getting out the key messages and vision of the management, and projecting Toyota as a leading automobile player in India. To achieve these objectives, Toyota will implement a two-phase plan of a pre-event and launch event strategy.
The vehicle's features include an 8-way power driver's seat, HID headlamps, steering wheel with audio controls and MID switch, and an Optitron meter.
The Toyota Altis comes in 3 grades: the 1.8 G M/T, the 1.8 G (L) M/T, and the top-end 1.8 V (L) A/T Model. The Corolla now delivers max power of 130 HP, 7 HP higher than the previous model.

Suzuki to unveil A-STAR in October
New Delhi: Suzuki is all set to unveil its much-awaited new compact A-Star at the Paris Motor Show in October, lifting curtains off a model that could replace the best-selling Alto in India in the long run. In Europe, it will be sold under the name 'Alto' and the Indian name is yet to be announced. A-Star will be produced solely in India for global markets and will hit the roads by October-November this year. The compact will come with a 1000cc aluminium petrol engine and is among the 'world strategic models' Suzuki is launching for a greater push globally. For the Indian market, the pricing could be Rs 3 lakh-plus, though company officials refused to comment on this. The car promises CO2 emission levels below 109 gm/km (much lower even to future European norms of 120 gm/km). While 1 lakh units would be meant for exports, mainly to Europe, the company would sell 50,000 units in India, while selling some to fellow Japanese automaker Nissan. The concept model of this car was designed and developed jointly by Maruti Suzuki and Suzuki Motors, marking it the first time when designers from Maruti's R&D team were involved from the very beginning. Suzuki said the all-new Alto (for Europe) builds on the company's strengths in the small-car development. While the Alto was discontinued in Europe around two years ago, it is currently the best-selling model in India.

Maruti's A-Star to meet European Emission Norms

Business Standard
New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki's compact A-Star, which will be launched in October, is expected to surpass the earlier strict emission norms announced by the company.Emission from the A-Star not only complies with the Euro 3 (Bharat-3) norms that are operational in 13 Indian cities, including Delhi, but also geared to meet stringent emission norms that will be implemented across Europe in the coming years. The A-Stars CO2 emission will be even lower than 109 gm/km which we had envisaged earlier. This is much lower than the European emission norms that require cars to emit 120 gm/km in the future said Shinzo Nakanishi, MD, Maruti Suzuki.India's Euro 3 norms is 5 years behind those currently enforced in Europe, while Euro 4 norms that are enforced outside the 13 Indian cities are 10 years behind European benchmarks. While gaseous and particulate matter comprise Euro 4 gradation in India, Europe's emission reports estimate the CO2 discharge levels only. Lower CO2 levels in cars means the car has superior fuel efficiency, said Anomita Chowdhury, Associate Director, Centre for Science and Environment.Maruti Suzuki's decision to manufacture the A-Star car in India is part of parent Suzuki's overall strategy to make India the manufacturing hub for the production of small cars like the Alto, Swift, and Maruti 800. We may consider manufacturing the A Star later in China which will cater to the Chinese market only. In that case we may have to export auto components from India to China, said Nakanishi. The firm hopes to export about one lakh units of the A-Star to Europe. In about 2-3 years from the launch, we may export to S America and the SE Asian region, he said.As part of its strategy to consolidate its position in the A2 segment, which will witness newer players like Nissan, Toyota, and Honda this year onwards, Maruti Suzuki has indicated it will launch the compact Splash next year.

New Delhi, July 4, 2008: Hyundai Motor India Ltd, India’s most innovative and fastest growing auto manufacturer today announced a novel Exchange and Upgrade Scheme that allow customers to lower their monthly car-loan payments even as they upgrade to a bigger car. The scheme is targeted at all those users of smaller compacts who would prefer to upgrade to a bigger car but are prevented from doing this by the higher EMI’s of a bigger car.The new Exchange and Upgrade Scheme offer will allow all these potential owners of bigger compacts to do just that. All they have to do is bring in their smaller compact to any Hyundai dealership and get an evaluation of this done at the dealership and put the value as a down payment to upgrade to a bigger Hyundai car. Typically the Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) value for a 48 month loan tenure works out to be an amount which will be lower than the EMI for a smaller car. The scheme is open for all makes of car and upgrade is possible for the most popular hatchback Santro, the newly launched, award winning i10 or even the bigger cars like the Accent and the Verna.“We want to see people upgrade to bigger compact cars and sedans which would be more compatible with the lifestyle of our current customers and hence we have tailor made these scheme for all the owners of smaller hatches who were so far forced to use a smaller car because of budgetary constraints”, said, Hyundai Motor India Sr. VP, Marketing & Sales, Arvind Saxena commenting on the offer.“Typically, a first-time car buyer opts for a compact car and subsequently upgrades. Hyundai is offering to make this upgrade process easier with the new scheme, especially at a time when inflation is high and the cost of loans has increased. In fact, the scheme has been structured in a way that will bring down the EMI’s”, he further added. The scheme will start from the first week of July and will continue till the end of the month.About HMILHyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea and is the second largest and the fastest growing car manufacturer in India. Hyundai Motor India to subsidize Fuel Bills
- Offers free fuel vouchers with every purchase of the Santro and i10New Delhi, June 24, 2008: Hyundai Motor India Ltd, India’s largest exporter and fastest growing auto manufacturer, in its first of its kind initiative, is offering a free fuel voucher worth Rs 2700, with every Santro and i10 purchased between June 20 and 30, 2008. The offer is expected to offset some of the additional cost of fuel that the customer would have to bear because of the recent fuel price increase. The calculations are based that on the assumption that a regular customer would use the car for to travel a distance of approximately 50kms every day and the additional amount that he/she would have to pay for this in the first six months (because of the increased price) corresponds to the amount of offer that HMIL is offering with the purchase of the car. “This is our way of helping customers cope with the increased fuel costs, and to demonstrate that the hike translates into just Rs 2700 additional fuel bills for a period of six months, given the fuel efficiency of a Santro or an i10.” said, Mr. Arvind Saxena, Sr. Vice President, Hyundai Motor India. The Hyundai Santro and the i10 yield 14 km. per litre, a fact vouched for by the prestigious independent expert panel at Autocar (see Autocar December 2007). Given this level of fuel efficiency, the fuel price hike translates into an additional cost of Rs 0.36 per km. when driving a Santro or an i10. Allowing for an average usage of 1250 km. per month, the cost from the price to a Santro or an i10 user would be Rs 446 per month or Rs 2678.60 for six months - a sum that Hyundai Motor India offers to reimburse! This is the first time that an auto manufacturer in India has put money on its claims of fuel efficiency levels. The scheme is executed in partnership with Indian Oil Corporation. About HMILHyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea and is the second largest and the fastest growing car manufacturer in India. HMIL presently markets 31 variants of passenger cars across segments. The Santro in the B segment, the Getz Prime and the i10 in the B+ segment, the Accent and the Verna in the C segment, the Sonata Embera in the E segment and the Tucson in the SUV segment. Hyundai Motor India, continuing its tradition of being the fastest growing passenger car manufacturer, registering total sales of 327,160 vehicles in the calendar year (CY) 2007, an increase of 9.2 percent over CY 2006. In the domestic market it clocked a growth of 7.6 percent as compared to 2006 with 200,412 units, while overseas sales grew by 11.8 percent, with exports of 126,748 units. HMIL’s fully integrated state-of-the-art manufacturing plant near Chennai boasts of the most advanced production, quality and testing capabilities in the country. In continuation of its commitment to provide the Indian customer with global technology, HMIL has set up its second plant, which produces an additional 300,000 units per annum, raising HMIL’s total production capacity to 600,000 units per annum. HMIL is investing to expand capacity in line with its positioning as HMC’s global export hub for compact cars. Apart from expansion of production capacity, HMIL plans to expand its dealer network, which will be increased from 230 to 300 this year. The year 2007 has been a significant year for Hyundai Motor India. It achieved a significant milestone by rolling out the fastest 400,000th export car. Hyundai exports to over 90 countries globally; even as it plans to continue its thrust in existing export markets, it is gearing up to step up its foray into new markets. The year just ended also saw Hyundai Motor India attaining other milestones with the launch of the i10 and yet another path-breaking record in its young journey by rolling out the fastest 1,500,000th car. Hyundai’s new model i10 which made its global debut here in India in October, 2007 made a clean sweep of all the ‘Car of the Year 2008’ awards from the leading automotive magazines and TV channels like BS Motoring, CNBC-TV18 AutoCar, NDTV Profit Car & Bike India and Overdrive magazine. The i10 is also the choice of the discerning automotive media of the country as they conferred the prestigious ‘Indian Car of the Year’ (ICOTY) award to the i10 as well. The i10 bagged these awards on the basis of excellence in build quality, handling, driver comfort, safety and ride quality. The Santro and the Accent also received the ‘TNS Voice of the Customer - 2008’ award for the Premium Compact Car (Santro) and the Entry Mid size Car (Accent). In March 2008 it achieved yet another milestone by rolling out the fastest 500,000th export car. Last year, the Hyundai Verna bagged some of the most prestigious awards starting with the title of "Car of the Year 2007" by India`s leading automotive publication – Overdrive, the “Best Mid-size Car of the Year” award by the NDTV Profit Car & Bike India Awards 2007, the “Best Value for Money Car” by the CNBC Autocar Auto awards and ‘Performance Car of the Year 2007’ from Business Standard Motoring. Hyundai cars have been a favorite at all awards ceremonies and have always been winning awards. Our models like Sonata Embera won the ‘Executive Car of The Year 2006’ award from Business Standard Motoring Magazine and NDTV Profit Car & Bike India declared the Tucson as the ‘SUV of The Year 2006’. Not only this, HMIL has also been awarded the benchmark ISO 14001 certification for its sustainable environment management practices.

Maruti brushes aside Nano competition
New Delhi: As Tata Motors gears up to roll out Nano by Durga Puja, country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki is confident that the Rs 1 lakh wonder will be of no competition to it."It (Nano) increases the market size but it will not cut into the market of people who are buying cars that are in the Rs two-lakh price category. A person who buys a car for Rs two lakh, I believe that there will be very few people who will buy this (Nano) car. It is a new segment," Maruti Suzuki India Chairman R C Bhargava said in an interview. He said people who could not buy Maruti 800 would buy Nano as the price difference was huge. Bhargava said more than the existing entry level cars, Nano will affect the two wheelers.Casting doubts over maintaining the Rs one lakh tag in the wake of rising steel prices and other input costs, Bhargava said: "The one lakh price will be difficult to maintain."Asked if MSI planned to come out with a competitor to Nano, he said: "Let me make it clear that there is no plan to develop a one-lakh car at Maruti."Commenting on the changes in MSI after government exited the company with Suzuki becoming the majority shareholder, Bhargava said: "It has does affect the style of the management."

Eco driving tips that help in better fuel economy
The Alliance of Automotive Manufacturers announced a new initiative today called eco-driving, a new nationwide effort to get Americans to save gas and reduce CO2 emissions.
The new programme, is designed to teach drivers safe and effective ways of driving that will boost their fuel mileage by about 15 per cent and significantly reduce their CO2 emissions.
Eco-driving experts say driving at a slower and constant speed shows a 10-15 per cent improvement in fuel economy. Pumping the accelerator sends more fuel into the engine and using cruise control on the highway helps maintain speeds and conserve fuel.
Accelerating smoothly from a stop and braking softly conserves fuel. Fast starts, weaving in and out of traffic and hard braking wastes fuel and wears out some of the car components, such as brakes and tires, more quickly. Maintaining safe distance between vehicles and anticipate traffic conditions will allow more time to brake and accelerate gradually.
Thanks to advanced technology, today's engines don't need a warm up. According to eco-driving instructors, one should start the car immediately and gently drive away. Prolonged idling increases emissions and wastes fuel. Another tip is to turn the engine off in non-traffic situations, such as at bank and fast food drive-up windows, when idling more than 30 seconds.
Under-inflated tires increaserolling resistance and reduce fuel economy plus they also wear more rapidly. Car tyres should be properly inflated with proper tyre pressure. This alone can reduce the average amount of fuel use by 3 - 4 per cent..
Engine tune-ups, wheel alignment, replacing air filters and using fuel with good detergent additives keeps the vehicle engine clean and performing efficiently. Consulting owner's manual is recomended for proper maintenance.
Auto experts say that excess weight in vehicles reduces aerodynamics, which hurt fuel economy, reducing it by as much as 5 per cent. Travelling light always helps in better fuel economy. Engine load can also be reduced by selective use of air conditioning and heating.Decreasing usage of the air conditioner when temperatures are above 80 degrees can save 10-15 per cent of fuel. Another method of reducing air conditioning use is to park vehicles in the shade to keeps them cool.
Interestingly, it has been studied that driving with the windows open at highways speeds increases aerodynamic drag on the vehicle and lowers fuel economy. Drivers are advised not to drive with the windows open unless the speed limit is under 50 mph.
Use of good quality, energy-conserving EC oils with the viscosity grade as recommended in the owner's manual, helps keep the vehicle engine tuned. Planning ahead to consolidate trips enables to bypass congested routes, lead to less idling, fewer start-ups and less stop-and-go traffic. Whenever feasible, share a ride and/or carpool.

Hyundai to roll out three new i-series cars
Taking a cue from the German luxury brands BMW and Mercedes Benz, which have had a good run in the Indian market, Hyundai, also the largest exporter of cars from India, will launch at least three new cars under its i-series for the domestic as well as the overseas market.
The next in line is i20, which will debut during the festive season in October while the other two variants - i30 and i40 - will come to India in the next few years. These new cars will come as new launches or replacement for the existing products.
According to Mr.HS Lheem, Managing Director & CEO, HMIL, “We plan to bring the entire portfolio of our new i-series cars to India. As a full range car company, the premium i30 and i40 cars have a significant potential in India. These new generation cars are ideal for the fast growing Indian market. Besides, we will also strengthen the i10 portfolio with a new engine and an automatic transmission in the next few months.”
The i10 hatchback will come with a new generation 1.2-litre Kappa series engine delivering 13 horsepower more than the current 1.1-litre 67 horsepower intelligent Repressive Drive Engine (iRDE).
Hyundai is also finalising its entry into the D-segment with the Avante sedan. Feasibility study for the product is in the final stages. The launch of its new SUV Santa Fe has been pushed to next year after the recent hike in excise duty on high-powered cars.
“We have renewed our emphasis on premium cars after maintaining a stronghold in the compact car segment. We are studying the market potential and analysing the new launches of the competitors in the C and D segment this year. The demand for premium cars is increasing in small cities and towns, and we are planning to focus our new products in such markets,” Mr.Lheem said.
With the soaring gasoline prices, the company is focusing on alternative fuel powertrains, and after introducing the CNG variants it will launch the Santro hatchback and Accent sedan on LPG fuel.
Hyundai has involved the Automotive Component Manufacturers’ Association of India (ACMA) demanding the Indian government to pursue a free-trade agreement (FTA) with South Korea on the lines of the Thailand FTA for low tax on automotive components.
Hyundai plans to export engines and critical parts from India to its global subsidiaries. It has set a target to export 20,000 engines to its sister concern Kia Motors in South Korea this fiscal year.

The new Audi Q5 unveiled at the Beijing motor show

The new Audi Q5 which was unveiled at the Beijing motor show
· The performance SUV from Audi raises the bar
· Innovative technologies for dynamic driving excitement
· Spacious interior with a myriad of intelligent functions
The new Audi Q5 combines the dynamism of a sports sedan with highly variable interior and versatile options for leisure-time and family use. Strong and efficient engines, quattro permanent all-wheel drive and agile running gear have been brought together to create a superior technology package for both on- and off-road driving. Highlights such as the innovative seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission and the Audi drive select control system are proof of Audi’s Vorsprung durch Technik. The sportiest SUV in its class is dynamic, multifunctional and comfortable.
The dimensions alone indicate that this is a SUV of all-new proportions. Measuring 4.63 meters (15.19 feet) long and 1.88 meters (6.17 feet) wide, the Audi Q5 is just 1.65 meters (5.41 feet) high – making it sportier than any of its competitors. What’s more, this SUV sets another benchmark in its class with a low drag coefficient of 0.33.
With its sporty elegance and artfully sculpted forms, the design of the Q5 is perfectly in tune with the character of Audi as a brand. The front end is dominated by expressive headlights on both sides of the large single-frame grille; on request, they can be outfitted with bi-xenon lamps and LED daytime running lights. Viewed from the side, the large wheels and rising edges are especially prominent features.
Crowned by a railing, the elegant slope of the roof underscores the slim, coupe-like styling. At the rear, the wraparound tailgate – made from aluminum just like the hood – clearly identifies this SUV as a relative of its older brother, the Audi Q7. The taillights are available in eye-catching LED technology as well.
Audi offers three different options for the external trim of the Q5 – black (standard), contrasting color or full paint finish in the color of the car. Two body packages are available as well. The S line exterior package imparts a decidedly sporty look to the performance SUV, while the alternative off-road style package with underbody protection in the front and back and 19-inch wheels gives this SUV a robust flair.
Long wheelbase, roomy interior
At 2.81 meters (9.22 feet), the wheelbase is the longest in its segment – creating a roomy interior on board the Audi Q5. The vehicle comfortably accommodates five persons in ergonomically designed seats that can be flexibly arranged. The backrests for the rear seats are angle-adjustable and especially easy to fold down by activating the remote release lever in the luggage compartment. This compartment, offering access to a second storage area under the floor, then expands from 540 to 1,560 liters (19.07 to 55.09 cubic feet) in volume. Optional extras include a rail mounting kit for luggage, a net partition and a luggage compartment liner.
The Audi Q5 is a multi-talent for sport, leisure-time and family activities. As an option, Audi offers the “rear bench seat plus”, which slides 100 millimeters (3.94 inches) lengthwise to provide a load-through facility. The front passenger’s seat can be outfitted with a folding backrest for transportation of long objects such as surfboards. Numerous practical storage compartments, drink holders, bottle holders and onboard power outlets are supplied ex works. On request, Audi even offers a climate-controlled drink holder to keep drinks hot or cold. The optional storage package features another clever detail as well – an attachment point in the passenger-side footwell to which various storage fixtures can be attached.
Top-of-the-line safety equipment is a matter of course for Audi cars. On the front seats, the belt force limiters and airbags work together in a new and especially intelligent manner. Much of the body of the Audi Q5 is made of high- and ultra-high-strength steel components assembled with maximum precision. They reduce weight while at the same time improving crash safety as well as rigidity and vibration patterns.
The Audi Q5 employs design elements typical of the brand in the interior, but adds its own unique variations – the driver-oriented cockpit is set higher, for example, in keeping with the upright sitting position. The ergonomics are exemplary, boasting the uncompromising craftsmanship one expects from Audi – a little treat for the senses in terms of look and feel. The clear-cut interior takes on even more charisma with fine materials such as aluminum, exclusive woods, chrome, leather and Alcantara as well as a large selection of optional design packages.
The Audi Q5 comes standard with an electromechanical parking brake, an intelligent chip key, a climate control system and a display screen in the instrument cluster depicting, among other things, the recommended ideal gear for efficient driving in the given situation. A large, central monitor is part of the standard equipment as well. When an onboard navigation system is added, many of the controls are shifted to the MMI panel on the center console. This is the next generation of the best operating system on the market – with even more intuitive graphics and control via the large rotary pushbutton.
Strong and efficient – the engines
The Audi Q5 is rolling off the production line in three engine variants – one gasoline engine and two TDI units. All of the engines are direct-injection models with a turbocharger – characterized by outstanding performance, hefty propulsive power and cultivated running while at the same time offering impressive fuel efficiency.
The 2.0 TFSI has been entirely redesigned. The four-cylinder engine unites three high-tech features – turbocharging, gasoline direct-injection technology and the innovative Audi valvelift system for variable control of valve lift.
The high torque of 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) is available at 1,500 rpm and remains constant up to 4,200 rpm, with performance peaking at 155 kW (211 hp). The Audi Q5 2.0 TFSI sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 7.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 222 km/h (137.94 mph). On average, the vehicle consumes just 8.5 liters of fuel per 100 km (27.67 mpg).
Drawing on four cylinders and two liters of displacement as well, the 2.0 TDI is superbly refined thanks to a new common-rail fuel injection system; like the gasoline engine, it has two balancing shafts. With 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) (between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm), this diesel engine delivers strong propulsive power at an outstanding
125 kW (170 hp). Average consumption of just 6.7 liters per 100 km (35.11 mpg) is proof of Audi’s successful efficiency strategy. The two-liter TDI catapults the Audi Q5 from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 9.5 seconds, peaking at a top speed of 204 km/h (126.76 mph).
The most powerful engine in the line-up is the 3.0 TDI. This V6 diesel engine delivers a gratifying 176 kW (240 hp), with 500 Nm (368.78 lb-ft) of torque available between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm. With outstanding power flow and cultivated sound, it takes the Audi Q5 from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 6.5 seconds, accelerating to a top speed of 225 km/h (139.81 mph). On average, the three-liter engine consumes 7.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (30.55 mpg).
Seven speeds – the new S tronic
The 2.0 TDI transfers its power to a six-speed manual transmission. Audi has built innovative technology into both the 3.0 TDI and 2.0 TFSI – the S tronic, a new twin-clutch transmission with seven speeds. This high-tech component can execute gearshifts in just a fraction of a second while offering exceptional comfort and high efficiency. Drivers can let the seven-speed S tronic shift automatically or select gears manually, when desired with rocker switches on the steering wheel.
Just like in the new Audi A4, pronounced the best midsized sedan by the trade press, the position of the component units in the drivetrain has been altered in the Audi Q5 – the differential is located in front of the clutch, directly behind the engine. This solution, which made it possible to move the front axle much further forward, creates a long wheelbase and optimum distribution of axle load. It is precisely these features from which the Audi Q5 derives its unique strengths – good directional stability, high comfort and impressive dynamics.
The pioneer of all-wheel drive, Audi builds the Audi Q5 standard with quattro permanent all-wheel drive – the only logical solution for a dynamic SUV. In normal running conditions, the transfer case distributes the power to the front and rear axle in a 40:60 ratio for a rear-focused style that enhances driving pleasure. When needed, the quattro driveline can deliver up to 65 percent of the power to the front axle and a maximum of 85 percent to the rear axle.
The running gear in the Audi Q5 further emphasizes its sporty nature. The five-link front axle and trapezoidal-link rear axle are made primarily from aluminum, the steering box below directs the steering impulse directly to the wheels. Large brakes ensure high retardation. The vehicle comes standard with 17-inch lightweight forged wheels in size 235/65. Audi offers even larger wheels of up to 20 inches in diameter on request.
The new performance SUV from Audi is sportily precise, spontaneous, safe and comfortable at the same time. Its electronic stabilization program (ESP) has been re-designed and enhanced with innovative functions not available from the competition. A sensor “tells” the ESP if a roof rack has been mounted, causing the Audi Q5’s center of gravity to be shifted higher in keeping with the roof load of up to 100 kilograms (220.46 pounds). If a roof rack is present, the ESP engages earlier in the handling limit. Without a roof load, the driver is free to tap the full dynamic potential of the Audi Q5.
The Audi Q5 is suitable for all purposes and driving surfaces. Capable of towing up to 2.0 tons, this powerful vehicle delivers excellent performance in rough terrain as well. The standard hill descent control system makes it safe to navigate down steep inclines by regulating the preselected speed when driving at under 30 km/h
(18.64 mph). The ESP and its sub-function, the ABS, have special ranges for off-road driving. The ESP focuses on achieving maximum traction in off-road driving; the ABS automatically recognizes the consistency of the driving surface and selects the ideal strategy for sand, gravel or loose rocks.
The numbers speak for themselves: The Audi Q5’s climbing capability of 31 degrees of incline is exceptional. The overhang angle is 25 degrees thanks to the short front overhang. The ramp breakover angle, determined by the wheelbase, is 17.5 degrees. Ground clearance is an impressive 20 centimeters (7.87 inches), with a fording depth of up to 50 centimeters (19.69 inches) when driving through water.
Audi drive select – for more driving pleasure
A large package of high-end technologies makes the Audi Q5 driving experience even more fascinating. The optional control system Audi drive select guides the operation of various technology components and is available in several upgrade variants. At the touch of a button, the driver determines whether the system should work in a comfortable, an especially well balanced or a sporty mode. The MMI operating system offers a fourth mode, which can be individually programmed.
Audi drive select is available with two innovative components. One is an electronic controller for the shock absorbers, the other is Audi dynamic steering. Outfitted with a superposition gear, it continuously varies the steering ratio and the power steering assistance depending on the speed driven – which means less steering effort is required when parking, and firm steering with low sensitivity at higher speeds. At the handling limits, the dynamic steering stabilizes the Audi Q5 in conjunction with the ESP by means of instantaneous steering interventions.
The new performance SUV from Audi is rolling off the production line with a generous range of standard equipment including an audio system with eight speakers. A highly contemporary modular system of components is available for multimedia options – the highest upgrade level features a Bluetooth telephone, a DVD drive, a TV tuner, an intelligent speech control system, an iPod interface and a top-of-the-line sound system from the Danish specialists Bang & Olufsen. The excellent navigation system boasts a high-resolution monitor for new, three-dimensional representation of maps. The hard disk from which the system reads can also save music files in MP3 format.
The assistance systems: Straight from the luxury class
On request, the Audi Q5 comes with a spectrum of high-tech, onboard systems taken directly from the premium class to make driving an even more superlative and relaxed experience. These include the Audi parking system advanced with rearview camera, Audi lane assist (the lane departure warning system) and Audi side assist, which warns of hazards when changing lanes. Adaptive cruise control maintains a constant distance between the performance SUV and the vehicle in front.
Additional high-tech extras for the Audi Q5 include the advanced key for keyless access to the vehicle, a tire pressure monitoring system, the large panoramic glass sunroof with additional tilting function, the triple-zone climate control system, sun blinds for the rear side windows, the dynamic cornering light system known as Audi adaptive light, an electric tailgate and a swiveling trailer hitch. The high-beam assistant automatically switches between the high and low beams. On request, the front seats can be electrically adjusted, heated and ventilated – Audi offers the extras from the luxury class in its new performance SUV here as well.
Audi, the German luxury car manufacturer, will launch its new Audi A4 sedan in July this year
Audi India Managing Director Mr. Benoit Tiers expresses, “The new Audi A4 will be a very important model for India and we hope that this award-winning car will take the hearts of our customers by storm! The Audi A4 holds a special significance with respect to achieve our proposed goal of more than 1,000 sold cars in India by the end of this year.” At an overall length of 4.70 metres, the new A4 is a large saloon. It boasts a substantial, powerful road presence. Its 480-litre boot and the legroom for rear passengers are larger than of any of its direct competitors.Inside the new A4, the ambience is spacious and full of light, as would be expected in a much larger model. It embodies the traditional Audi strengths - a distinguished appearance, no-compromise high-quality workmanship with close attention to detail and logical, intuitive controls. The Audi A4 comes with high standard equipment to India, including features previously known only from upper segments. Audi brings the Multi Media Interface (MMI) as available option to the Audi A4, additionally the Optical Parking System with rear-view camera and the Bang & Olufsen Sound System. The system Audi Drive Select will give the customers ‘three cars in one’ by the possibility to select three different modes for agility and comfort. Hybrid: high mileage and high price

Priced at a steep Rs 21.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the car is powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine and an electric motor.
India is the 33rd country where Honda has launched its Civic hybrid. With crude oil projected to surge to $200 a barrel by sometime next year from the current $137 and with no commercially viable alternative fuel anywhere in sight, auto aficionados are increasingly drawn by the allure of hybrids.
The Honda Civic hybrid’s biggest selling point is its fuel efficiency of 19-23km a litre — on a par with, if not better than, a Maruti Zen or a Hyundai Santro.
The company said the hybrid car was 47 per cent more fuel-efficient than the petrol version. This is because the car draws on petrol or battery power, depending on the speed of the car. The battery charges on its own when the car runs on petrol.
“When the car is idling or running at low speeds, it draws power from the battery-operated electric motor. At high speeds, it automatically switches to the petrol engine,” said Jnaneswar Sen, the vice- president (marketing), Honda Siel Cars India (HSCI).
The biggest turn-off for the customer is the price — which is more expensive than executive saloons like the Honda Accord or the Toyota Camry.
Honda blames it on the high customs duty of 104 per cent that has to be paid on imports of completely built units (CBUs).
“Countries like Japan and US offer us an incentive to produce such cars. India, on the other hand, imposes a heavy customs duty. This is odd because fuel prices are at an all-time high and the government wants carmakers to produce green cars,” said Masahiro Takedagawa, the president and CEO, HSCI.
“This (the launch) is another step to strengthen Honda’s presence in India in line with our long term goal of bringing eco-friendly vehicles,” Takedagawa added.
The Civic hybrid was launched in the US and Japan in 2006 and worldwide sales have topped 2.20 lakh units.
While Honda Siel refused to give sales estimates for the hybrid in India, Takedagawa said: “We have already got about a 100 enquiries. We are not looking to sell more than a 1,000 units.”
“The objective behind this launch is to show our (Honda’s) commitment to India in bringing its advanced technology, which is fuel-efficient and environment-friendly. We are not looking at any volumes in India for this product,” he added.
In the race to produce hybrid cars, Toyota beat Honda by almost two years: the Toyota Prius debuted in 1997. The vastly improved second-generation Prius in 2003 became an instant hit, helping Japan’s top automaker win a reputation overnight as the frontrunner in green technology.
But Honda is hoping to change all that. It aims to sell about 500,000 hybrids a year by 2015 -- nine times what it sold last year -- rivalling Toyota’s own goal of boosting hybrid sales to a 10th of its total sales after 2010.

Ford's small car for India by 2010

The US automobile giant Ford Motor Co proposes to launch its small car for the Indian market by 2010 and will set up a new unit soon to manufacture engines, top officials said on Thursday. "Small car segment holds 75 per cent in Indian market and when we launch the small car that's when the real volumes will come in," Ford India managing director and president Michael Boneham told media at the launch of the company's new car. He also said Ford's new engine manufacturing facility will be set up in 2009-10 with a capacity of 250,000 units per year. "The plant will fulfill the entire domestic demand and will also cater to the needs for ford in the Asia Pacific region." The company also launched a new sports variant of the mid-sized sedan here Thursday - the Fiesta S that clocks 0-100 km in 11 seconds. Also launched was an upgraded SXI variant of the Fiesta featuring new front grille and head lamps.
Boneham said the company has now increased the warranty for all its cars to two years or 40,000 km to two years or 100,000 km, whichever was logged first. Fiesta SXI will be priced at Rs.700,000 and Rs.814,000 for the petrol and the diesel variants, respectively, in Delhi. Fiesta S will come with a price tag of Rs.715,000. Boneham said that the mid-sized sedan, since its launch in the country two-and-a-half years ago, and has sold more than 65,000 units. The company, however, had a 19 per cent fall in sales during 2007-08, which he attributed to the sluggish Indian auto industry in the last financial year.
Renault, Nissan, Bajaj JV to make big cars-paper
"There's no way one can compete with a single product in any market, be it cellphones or motorcycles or cars," the newspaper quoted Bajaj Auto Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj as saying.
"So, we are planning a portfolio of products. There would be different products, not just variants of the same product at different price points," Bajaj said.
The companies would sign an initial agreement on the expansion by July, the newspaper said.
The joint venture, which was formed in May this year, will start by making cars with prices starting from $2,500, putting it squarely in the same range as Tata Motors'Nano.
It has a planned capacity of 400,000 units a year. Sales will start in early 2011 in India, with potential in other emerging markets around the world.
Car sales in India, forecast to nearly double to 2 million units by 2010, has grown at an annual rate of about 15 percent in the last five years, helped by higher incomes and new launches.

Indian Carmakers' Hybrid Plans
Jumping onto the hybrid bandwagon with their low-cost technologies, the two local majors are looking to roll out models that will cost a fraction of the Rs 21.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) that Honda's Civic sedan does. The Civic hybrid, India's first hybrid car, was launched on Wednesday. It is fully imported from Japan and thus attracts a high duty of over 100%.
The domestic majors are developing indigenous technology at a much lower tax burden. Hence the homegrown hybrids will come at a much lower price. According to sources, the Tata and M&M hybrid models will come at an additional cost of less than Rs 1 lakh to the existing range. Tata Motors has set a benchmark price of Rs 45,000 for the hybrid car technology while M&M's cost target is of around Rs 80,000 for its utility vehicle range.
Tata Motor is expected to launch a diesel and petrol-fired hybrid technology on its flagship model Indica. The smaller version of the same technology is also expected in its small car Nano. A Tata Motors executive said: "We are still in the research phase and it will take some time to roll out hybrid vehicles. We have already launched our electric technology in the mini-truck ACE and its improved version will follow in the Indica and Indigo range of cars."
M&M is also developing an affordable hybrid version primarily for its diesel vehicles, which will hit the market in the next two years. M&M senior vice-president R&D Arun Jaura told ET: "We are taking a totally different approach to developing the mechanical and electric hybrid technology. We are working on a new format of blending electronics, powerdrive, battery and software to develop an indigenised hybrid technology, ideal for Indian conditions.
It is currently under trial and I cannot reveal its price. We plan to provide seamless alternative mobility solution to the customers at very competitive prices." The company had already showcased a hyrbid Scorpio at the Auto Expo 2008 in New Delhi in January and is further improving the technology for commercial application.
Launching the new hybrid will also help these companies meet future emission norms in domestic and overseas markets. They can reduce the average CO2 emissions to meet stringent norms applicable in developed markets like Europe and North America.
"The hybrid technology will help these companies meet the advanced euro IV and V norms, which will come into force in the next decade. These companies are developing hybrid systems based on their new line of petrol and diesel engines that mate an electic motor with different automated and manual transmissions," said a source. These vehicles are expected to hit the Indian market early 2010.
